ABOUT US

Founded by Rabbi Lavy M. Becker in 1960 as the Reconstructionist Synagogue of Montreal, we are an egalitarian, participatory community of Jews who seek to promote creative Jewish life and culture in keeping with the principles of the Reconstructionist Movement within Judaism.

The raison d'être of this synagogue community is to be a welcoming and comfortable Jewish home in which any Jew can participate, regardless of background, current level of observance or Jewish knowledge.

Our congregation's name, Dorshei Emet, "Seekers of Truth", reflects our commitment to lifelong, spiritual growth.

WHAT IS
RECONSTRUCTIONISM?

"Judaism is the evolving religious civilization
of the Jewish people"

We believe:

  • that collective Jewish life must evolve to reflect the contemporary realities of our lives
  • that being a Jew means being engaged in a life long process of Jewish learning.
  • that we must come together to develop our own understanding of Jewish civilization.
  • that humans need spiritual fulfillment and that prayer and ritual help us express this dimension of life.
  • that God is associated with justice and righteousness, love and compassion.
  • that we, as religious humanists, approach God as the Power that makes for social liberation and human fulfillment.
  • that the Jewish civilization includes the full range of Jewish culture, customs and traditions, including literature, poetry, philosophy, music and arts from the ancient times until today.
  • that our ethical challenge is to translate the teachings of Torah into a social reality.
  • that Zionism is an integral part of Jewish identity and that we are committed to the continuing well being of the State of Israel.
  • that Hebrew is an essential vehicle for the transmission of Jewish culture, both religious and secular, worldwide.
  • that Judaism will be perpetuated through communities of Jews who strive to live creative Jewish lives.
  • that all Jews, not just the rabbis, be equally concerned with and responsible for the perpetuation of Jewish life.
